World Press Photo 2017
- didascalia: November 26, 2016 - During an advance against Islamic State, fighters of the Libyan forces affiliated to the Tripoli government take position on a destroyed building in Al Jiza neighbourhood. Sirte, Libya, is one of the three self-proclaimed capitals of the so-called Islamic State, along with Raqqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq. It was the first of the three to fall, with an offensive launched by the Libyan government in May 2016. It took seven months of fighting, 500 American airstrikes, the lives of 700 Libyan soldiers and more than 3,000 injured Libyan soldiers to finally declare the city free.

La fotografia che ritrae Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, l'assassino dell'ambasciatore russo in Turchia, urlante davanti al corpo della vittima a cui ha appena sparato, è stata scattata nel dicembre 2016 dal corrispondente di AP Burhan Ozbilici, fotoreporter turco di 59 anni, ed è stata decretata quest'anno World Press Photo of the Year.
Quest'oggi sono stati proclamati anche i vincitori delle altre categorie del concorso, tra essi figurano tre italiani: Alessio Romenzi (terzo nella categoria General News con il reportage "We Are Not Taking Any Prisoners", che racconta un'azione delle forze libiche contro l'Isis ad Al Jiza), Francesco Comello (terzo nella sezione Daily Life con la storia "Isle of Salvation che documenta la vita in una scuola-comunità russa fondata dalla Chiesa Ortodossa) e Antonio Gibotta (dell'Agenzia Controluce, secondo nella categoria People per il suo racconto della pacifica guerra combattuta con farina, acqua e uova nella città di Ibi in Spagna).
Da segnalare il primo premio per foto singole nella categoria Contemporary Issue assegnato a Jonathan Bachman per una foto che la scorsa estate è stato oggetto di riflessione su questo sito da parte di Carlo Cerchioli

Mevlut Mert Altıntaş, a 22-year-old off-duty police officer, assassinated the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, at an art exhibition in Ankara, Turkey, on 19 December 2016. He wounded three other people before being killed by officers in a shootout.
